Mod - Celestial Bodies
by TohKlidan - version 0.9

Inspired and based on Solar Mod by Cybdevil

Requirements:

or Entrenchment 1.03

Mod Features:

This mods main focus is about adding more celestial body types and extending the existing ones. Which means more size and effect variety, new bonuses and abilities. Also some new researches are included but only things that had to do with colonization or avoiding effects from planet/star abilities. Also this mod contains special scenarios some of them taking place in our own solar system.

Current Celestial Body Count: 104

Overiew of Celestial Body Types:

- Desert 4 sizes (Moon, Dwarf, Normal and Huge)
- Ice 4 sizes (Moon, Dwarf, Normal and Huge)
- Terran 4 sizes (Moon, Dwarf, Normal and Huge)
- Volcanic 4 sizes (Moon, Dwarf, Normal and Huge)
- No Atmosphere 4 sizes (Moon, Dwarf, Normal and Huge)
- GasGiant 2 Sizes (Small, Big) and 2 variants (stable gas and unstable gas)
  also colonizable via new researches
- Homeplanets (Terran, Desert, Ice, Volcanic, PirateBase)
- Blackhole (from 7 Sins Mod with new fx)
- Deep Space Sector
- Nebula
- all existing asteriods, stars etc. have now adjusted sizes and gravity wells.
- White Pulsar (star with new ability)
- Blue Magnetar (star with new ability)
- 6 different Companion Stars (for multi systems)
- 44 different Celestial Bodies of our Solar System.
(14 with a unique texture, thanks to Cybdevil)

And 2 Demo Maps (not balanced for gameplay) to see the
new features in the ForgeTools and ingame.

New Galaxy Forge setups:
- for all new Planets
- Random for Sizes
- Random Moons
- Random Companion Star
- Random Anomaly
- Updated orignal setups with new planets

Here are some ideas and things that will be included with future releases:

- new bonuses and abilities for planets and stars
- new planets and stars
- New Maps and Updating my maps with events/story
  (if ever possible)
...

Known issues:
- sometimes the corona effect of the companion stars are shown before you zoomed in or explored the star,
The problem exists with all effects that attached to meshes via mesh points.
(see the TEC starbase you will see the glow on the top before the body shows up, too)

vanilla Version issues:

- only the custom scenarios appear in the map menu, to fix this:
Sins treats the mod's Galaxy folder as the Galaxy folder,
meaning it ignores the standard one if a mod has one.
So the solution is to copy/paste every map you have in the Galaxy folder
in your Sins install folder into the mod's Galaxy folder. (Thanks to SpardaSon21)

The download works now, not sure what the problem was. Thanks for checking.

I've been bored today so I wrote a wish list for the mod. Some of this has been mentined. Some may not be practical but most of it relates to trying to realisticlly map the solar system and exoplanets properly. I have no idea how to model but manipulating the script text files are no problem. Research and information gathering also arnt a problem. What can I do to help get some of this in the mod?

Standard Star, Companion Star and Giant Star for each of the common Spectral Classes. Some already exist.

O    Blue
B    Blue-White
A     White
F    Yellow-White
G    Yellow
K    Orange
M    Red

These stars do not need a giant version but the Companion is a must:

M    Red Dwarf  distinct from normal Red stars. These are very common. Should be smaller than normal.
D    White Dwarf  -  distinct from normal White stars. Physically Smaller.
T    Brown Dwarf - something between a star and a planet. They need to be done as stars since they have planets.

RandomStarNonGreen and RandomCompanionStarNonGreen groups without the Green stars but including all others.
-------------------------------------------
Gas Planets
4 sizes: Super Jupiter, Jupiter (Giant), Saturn, Neptune (Dwarf)
All with optional rings.

I    Methane Clouded: Blue with white methane clouds, like Neptune
II    Ammonia Clouded: Red and white cloud bands, brown hydocarbon stains, like Jupiter
III    Water Clouded: Bright white cloud bands, light blues, like Earth no land, no oceans.
IV    Sulpher Clouded: Yellow sulpherous haze and clouds
V    Clearified: Deep blue, no clouds
VI    Dark Hot: Dark  grey or brown sodium haze
VII    Cloudy Hot: white Silicate clouds over dark grey sodium haze

see See: http://www.sciencefairlive.com/students/2007_IT_06R/Images.html for images

A random size group for each class. But not a Random class group, the conditions they form under are different temps and it makes no sense.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I'd like to see a DenseAtmosphere class for use with worlds like Titan and Venus that have dense atmospheres but arnt Terran. They stand out in
that regard. I think it should be based on Volcanic as both have vulcanism and it seems to be required to refresh the atmosphere over time.
-----------------------
I'd like to see a OceanWorld. Deep oceans, no real core. Clouds but no land masses. Frozen this is an Ice world but in the habitable zone its all water.
Definatly floating cites. Fishfarms, SuperTyphoons, Seamonsters, yes. Mining bonus no.
--------------------------------------------------------------
The following random groups:
    InnerSystemNonTerranBody
        Volcanic, Dwarf, Huge
        NoAtmosphere, Dwarf, Huge
        Desert, Dwarf, Huge
        DenseAtmos, Dwarf, Huge

    OuterSystemBody
        Ice, Dwarf, Huge
        NoAtmosphere, Dwarf, Huge
        DenseAtmos, Dwarf Huge

    InnerSystemNonTerranMoon
        Ice, NA,Dense

    OuterSystemMoon
        Volcanic,Desert,NA,Dense

----------------------------------------------
Remove the bonus "planetMegaFauna" and "planetTundraFarms" from
    Callisto
    Europa
    Ganymede
    Ceres
    possibly others

------------------------------------------------------------
Ceres, and all other asteroids should be based on NoAtmosphere worlds, not Ice worlds I know you want to spice it up. See the DenseAtmosphere Class below.
Most moons of Jupiter and further out (except Titan, Io and captured asteroids), Kuiper Belt objects, and Scattered Disk Objects should be based on Ice Worlds with the 2 bonus above removed.
The display for everything with a name should be somewhat round, not asteroid like.
--------------------------------------------------------------
The GasGiant Colonize Tech lowered to the same level as Ice and Volcanic.
NA, and Dense Atmos techs. Ok so maybe Gasgiant by 1 level higher than Ice and in conjunction with these 2.
-----------------
Neried should be dropped as a seperate entity, or a lot of other stuff added.
Mimas, Charon and any other hydostaticlly round objects need to be added.
-----------------------
Ideas for the boring outer body problem.

7 moons are exceptional large: Moon, 4 Galilean, Titan, Triton. Maybe a Huge Moon class on the scale of the Dwarf planets?
2 have dense atmospheres: Titin, Triton: See DenseAtmosphere class above.
3 are majorly geologically active: Io, Triton, Enceladus.  How about a Cryovolcano class for the last 2 to cover the ice geysers?
4 have subsurface oceans of water under ice: Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan. Maybe an IceShell class with features of the Ice and Ocean worlds.
1 has a ring sysem: Rhea.

Several of these lead to combinations with existing classes, IceShellNoAtmosphere is Europa, IceShellDenseAtmosphere is Titan.

thanks for your post svarogteuse. A lot of good ideas!

I also downloaded your excel sheet before and I will definatly add some new planets for the sol system.

I like also the idea of the Dense Atmosphere planet type.

Also the Cryovolano (this is maybe a good new planet bonus for ice planets, to add not to much new planettypes)

Dwarfstars and K class star (orange) are already on my todo list

But now i have one big problem to overcome , to add more than 1 new planet colonize research per race. There is a hardcode problem and i am currently waiting for an answer from IC, if there will be a solution or not.

I'm working on a mod right now to do exactly what you said. Although, i beleive the star mesh size cant change. (tell me if im wrong).

I canged it and it works. all stars have different sizes in my mod.

Great. Let me know if I can do anything to help.

Meanwhile I've been playing with StarGen. Rewriting some of the code to make more CB sins friendly systems. I ran into a question I'm not sure how I want to answer. Stargen defines both Mercury and Pluto as Rocks, planets mostly (at least 50%) rock with no atmosphere. Worlds it defines as Ice are rock worlds in a glacier state that have an atmosphere (breathable or not). Now I have generally been defining Pluto as an Ice world but finding this in the program brough to mind the following question: are Ice (and Volcanic and Desert I guess) worlds habitable worlds be definition or not? i.e. are they Terran worlds just at one extreme OR are they non-habitable worlds like Europa, Io and Mars (though Mars may be arguable)? A lot of my question here comes down to density. Rock worlds like Earth have a density of about 5g/cm. What I have been defining as Ice have a density of about 2g/cm because half the planet is make of ice not rock. However a planet like Hoth is also an Ice world. So I guess the question I really want discussed is should worlds like Pluto, Europa and Calliso be defined as Ice based on density or as No Atmosphere because of well the obvious? Should the main types: Terran, Ice, Volcanic, Desert be reserved for habitable worlds or not?

on May 06, 2009

The question is:

Do you prefer realism or balanced gameplay that makes fun?

My intention is to get as close as possible to the realism but if reality i too boring or unbalanced I change it and leave the reality behind.

For the sol system itself I said that most of the planets are terraformed (before you start the game ). So they maybe look different or have an breatable atmosphere and so on...

I also think that StarGen planet categories differ from the Sins ones. So in my opinion are desertplanets in sins terranlike with breathable atmosphere but very very dry (like tatooine). I think if you research in Sins a colonization technology than your are able to change the atmosphere of this planets for you to life.

Now I have generally been defining Pluto as an Ice world but finding this in the program brough to mind the following question: are Ice (and Volcanic and Desert I guess) worlds habitable worlds be definition or not?

Hard to answer. But i think they are terran worlds with extrem condition and can have toxic or special atmosphere (via planet bonus)

So I guess the question I really want discussed is should worlds like Pluto, Europa and Calliso be defined as Ice based on density or as No Atmosphere because of well the obvious? Should the main types: Terran, Ice, Volcanic, Desert be reserved for habitable worlds or not?

I think both is right. It is a matter of taste as I said before, sometimes reality sucks

If i compare Sins with Masters of Orion 2, then MoO2 planets have more parameters to describe the whole planet. As far as I remember each planet had a "bodytype" and "atmosphere type" and these two parameters said if you where able to colonize it or not without terraforming  (in Moo terraforming was possible).

In sins you have only the planettype and the subtypes are made with the planet bonuses.

Not really. You are right that there were two parameters for the planets, size and atmosphere (well, and gravity, which would penalize your productivity on a high or a low gravity world - or a normal gravity world if your race was used to low grav), but you could colonize every planet there is from the get go.

Terraforming is actually a tech from the early midgame by which you would have wanted to have colonized the most valuable  planets already, regardless if it could sustain life or not, and then work your way up from radiated (needs radiation shield tech to make it barren before you can start terraformin it) to barren, to tundra or desert to swamp and dry (marslike, can't remember what it's called) respectively to terran and way later on if you wanted to gaia.

All of these worlds are colonizable from the get go, no need for a special tech to be researched, and the only difference between them is how well you can grow food on them, if at all, and how much room there is for people to live.

Sorry for the lecture, but I played MoO2 for 2 years straight at least 5 hours a day, so I felt the urge to comment on that

Some constructive critisism...

I just played your vanilla version and there were so many problem it ruined the experience. First of all some of the pictures and stuff are missing. Second it is plauged by string not found problems. Third the Sol system planets are messed up big time. They are not textured corectly and just dont feel right. For example, Uranaus is suposed to have vertical rings not horrizontal but your Terra is amazing. You should add nutron stars and double stars, two stars that orbit each other. Also there were varyous other small isues that took away from the mod. Not to be a jerk but in my opinon your mod was taking away from the game rather than adding to it.

I didn't played included scenarios so I may have not run into some of the issues you're experiencing, and I'll leave them to the mod developer to answer.

However, I feel to state that it's really hard for this mod to "take away" something from a game that have only 3 type of planets...and no size difference at all between them.

I personally can't imagine Sins without this one, run perferctly to me.

Thanks TohKlidan.

The vanilla version has its problems, I know it was a quick downgrade from the entrenchment version. Also the vanilla version is still v0.7 while the entrenchment version has reached v0.8b.

I know about the Uranus rings, but there is no way to change the angle of it so i left them horizontal.

Maybe you should try the entrenchment version.

And thanks for your post soasertsus.

I have finished a working version of Stargen that generates systems using the CB planets. It also generates a loadable Galaxy file for the said system (Galaxy Forge only, it needs player home worlds added at least to open in the game) if the option is checked. I reccomend  reading the Key file to understand which worlds show up and way. Right now I have taken all the various Giants and Methanes out of the code so its just standard CB worlds.  Water worlds display as Terran. I did leave Dense Atmosphere ones with the SolVenusian type.

The best way to use this is generate random system till you get one you like, record the system # before the -0 that is the seed. Then generate the same system with that seed checking the generate sins galaxy file option.

I hope you find this useful.

Sup  TohKliden,

I was recently goin through some people's mods looking for those that are in the same area as mine.  My mod is called Urban Expansion (https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/331334).  My mod currently came out of being partially dead (my computer broke down) and the users of it havn't had an update in a long time, so I am pushing a UE1.2 release this weekend.  I thought of adding Dwarf Planets to my mod, and was begining work on my own, but then I saw your mod.  I am wondering if you would give me permission to merge your mod with mine (I will not merge the whole thing but the things I will merge 100% would be your Dwarf Planets and perhaps your Giant sized Planets, a long with your White Pulsar).  I will give you FULL CREDIT on my mod page and in the readme in my mod as to what I merged.

Thanks,
XselenS
